The Deer Park is located at a distance of around 16kms from the city of Hyderabad in Vanasthali-puram, Andhra Pradesh. The park covers an area of around 54acres of land, which abounds in wildlife. The Deer Park is not the part of the city instead it is preserved by the Forest Department. In earlier days, the Deer Park was the hunting ground of the Nizam.

The park has a rich vegetation cover that comprises of various plants & trees. Around 189hectares of land is covered with acacia trees. During the monsoon season the beautiful golden flowers of these trees covers the lush green grass and lends the ambience an enchanting look. The park is a home to various species of deers along with a large number of birds. One can see a large numbers of Black Buck grazing here & there in the park. The park remains open throughout the week except on Monday. The visiting hours are between 9a.m till 5p.m.

History behind the name:  The Vanasthalipuram deer park - Mahavira Harina Vanasthali is named after the renowned Indian saint “Lord Mahavir” in commemoration of his 2500th birth anniversary in the year 1975. Vana means forest, sthali means place and puram is locality or site. Once the Nizam's Shikargarh or hunting grounds, the Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park, is today home for a few hundred black bucks along with several species of birds. A deer park was set up in order to preserve this precious heritage and rehabilitate. The area is also regaining its former appearance with lush green carpet of grass. The black buck is considered the most handsome of all its kind with its spiralled horns that have corkscrew like turns giving them a majestic look. The beautiful black buck, known as Krishna Jinka in Telugu, was declared the state animal of Andhra Pradesh. Mahaveer Harina Vanasthali National Park provides the black buck its much-needed safe haven to exist. It is also home to many species of birds. The pond herons, egrets, kingfishers, cormorants can be sighted almost always.

How to reach::  By Road: Mahavira Harina Vanasthali is located in the outskirts of metropolitan city of Hyderabad on Hyderabad - Vijayawada road. It is easily approachable by road from Hyderabad city.

Information for tourists:  It is maintained by the Forest Department and is not a part of city-town. Quite often travelers on the highway can see through the wire netting, little groups of deer. Visitors can take a ride inside the park sitting inside a van and get quite close to the deer, but then a small amount of fee is collected if one goes in by van or car. As such there is no entry fee. They can climb a tower and look at the animals. Timings: 9 a.m to 5.30 p.m, daily except Monday. Safari rides 9.30 a.m to 5.00 p.m
