The Mukkurthi National Park is located in the Nilgiri Hills and forms a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere reserves. It is interspersed with sholas and woodland. Situated about 40 Km from Udhagamandalam, Mukkurthi National Park is home to a variety of animal and bird life. Some of the important animal lives that you can spot in the Park are the Nilgiri Tahr (Hamitragus-hilocrius), Sambhar, Nilgiris Marten, River Otter, Barking deer, Jackal, Jungle cat and many other animal species.

The avifauna at the Mukkurthi National Park consists of a variety of birds that are commonly found in the hilly regions. The national park is indeed bliss for bird watchers. You can spot the laughing and whistling thrushes, wild pigeon, woodcock and black eagle. Besides the above mentioned bird life, Indian Red Admiral and the Blue Admiral can also be seen. There are many trekking routes that exist from the Parson valley and the Pykara valley, making it an important spot for wildlife lovers. If you are a fishing enthusiast, then it's definitely the place for you. You can go for trout fishing in the rivers and lakes here at the Mukkurthi National Park. However, for fishing, you will have to obtain permission from Asst. Director, Fisheries Department.
