Melghat Tiger Reserve


Melghat Tiger Reserve General Information Date of Establishment-1967. Area-1,674square.kilometers. Location-The reserve is situated in district of Amravati in Central India. About Melghat Tiger Reserve! Melghat tiger reserve is situated at a distance of 25kms from the famous Chikaldhara hill resort, which is located in the southern range of Satpura (Gavilgarh hills). It is positioned in the district of Amravati and is 225kms west of the city of Nagpur. The sanctuary covers a vast track of land i.e. around 1674square.kilometers. The place was declared a tiger reserve in the year 1974 so as to safeguard the tigers. The place is quite rocky and hilly and is bordered by the river Tapi on the northern side. The best time for visiting the place is between the months of December to June. Flora-The place is very rich in natural vegetation cover and has around 700 different species of plants & trees. Some of the common species are teak, lagerstroemia parviflora, terminalia tomentosa, oujenia oojeinesis, emblica officinalis, bamboo etc. Fauna-The chief attraction of the place is the tigers that stay quite interior of the forest. In addition to it, one can also see various other animals like leopards, barking deers, chital, sambar, wild boar, gaur, nilgiri, wild dog and many more. Accessibility Air-The closest airport is located at Nagpur (225kms). Road-The sanctuary is well connected to major places. Rail-The closest railway station is located at Badnera (110kms).
